The best way to witness wildlife is to wake up early to the sound of hundreds of birds and monkeys. You will see many species of tanagers, toucans, parrots, parakeets, antbirds, anteaters, woodpeckers and monkeys that come to feed on the fruit and insects found on the trees. It is the perfect way to start the day in the Peruvian Amazon. Afterwards, you will navigate the pampa caño river to enjoy the sunrise over the horizon of the Amazon jungle. As with all excursions, there is always the possibility of spotting other types of wildlife such as sloths, monkeys and iguanas, as well as birds along the river banks. In a single early morning you can see at least 90 species of birds, 30 of which are rare.

Just before nightfall, you will navigate the Pampa Caño and Amazonas rivers. The world famous pink and gray river dolphins will begin to appear near your boat while the sunset provides the perfect backdrop. Take a moment to breathe in the freshest air on the planet. For centuries, river people have moved along the rivers of the Amazon in canoes. Even today, this mode of transportation is the best way to explore the streams: sailing slowly, listening to the sounds of the jungle, and observing nature, enjoying it. The exact way the riverside people see the jungle. If you are a canoe birdwatcher, you can observe and take photographs of many species of birds that feed and nest near the river banks. Many primate species such as brown capuchins, squirrel monkeys and saddle back tamarins are easy to spot. You can even spot rare and elusive creatures like river otters from the canoes.

The Amazonian people are the preservers of knowledge transmitted from one generation to another. Before cutting a plant in preparation to extract medicine, many healers ask permission from the protector of the jungle; If they don’t ask permission, the medicine doesn’t work. This ancient belief is responsible for keeping the natural forces of the superpower in harmony.

Take part in a fascinating jungle hike to this secluded lagoon that was once part of the river many years ago. Rainbow Lagoon is home to many species of aquatic plants such as giant water lilies that can grow up to 6 feet in diameter with flowers the size of a cabbage. You will also observe the strangely interesting hoatzin, a bird that feeds exclusively on poisonous plants that it can keep in its harvest for several hours. Another species of bird you will encounter on this walk through the Amazon rainforest is the horned screamer which is related to the goose family and feeds on water lettuce and water hyacinth. Lastly, but perhaps most fascinating, you’ll get to see the bearded jacana, nicknamed Jesus Christ because it can walk on water. These are just some of the many animals that live in this varicose forest.

Embark on an adventurous boat ride along the tributaries of the Amazon River. You will see abundant wildlife and nature in all its splendor as we search for Amazon River specialties such as blue and yellow macaws, jacanas, trogons, black-necked hawks, orioles, yellow-headed Cara Cara and tanagers, among others. Your guide will also help you spot sloths and monkeys in the trees above as you navigate the Amazon rivers. 

If you enjoy the river during the day, imagine the life that awakens at night. On our night excursion, you will travel along the river, searching for wildlife with flashlights. Chances of seeing wildlife are good. You will see beautifully colored frog-like creatures resting on the floating plants on the edges of the streams. You will see fishing bats catching their prey using their talons like hawks, detected by sophisticated sonar.
By the light of your flashlight, you’ll see potoos, owls, and alligators (located through their red eyes) venturing into the darkness to catch their prey. At night you will also find creatures such as kinkajoos that feed on fruits and berries. They are easy to see as they jump from branch to branch in the trees along the river. Even the opossum that preys on birds can be seen mainly at night. These are just a few of the many creatures that love to come out at night.

Night is the best time to feed. Once the sun sets, many creatures come out, some are the predators and some are the prey. On this night tour, you will see exotic beetles (rhino and elephant species) tarantulas, snakes, boas and moths (sphinx and roschildia species). You will also find some lizards sleeping on the leaves. On our walk, you will be able to see various species of frogs such as the famous owl frog that makes holes in the ground and weighs more than ½ pound. The inhabitants of the Amazon use the skin of this interesting anuran to make drums, but the owl frog protects itself from its predator by releasing a milky liquid from its skin. There is also a frog called the gladiator tree frog that makes its nest near water to get away from potential rivals and attract females for mating. At some point during the walk we will ask you to turn off your flashlight and remain silent to let your senses adjust to the darkness, listening to the sounds of the jungle so you can identify what they are and where they come from. At this time, you will be able to truly appreciate the immensity of the Amazon rainforest with all its countless secrets.

The mysterious sounds of the jungle will be a highlight throughout the excursion. Alligators are close relatives of the alligator that can be found throughout the Amazon rainforest. Like their crocodile cousins, alligators live near rivers and other bodies of water. Most alligators are about six or seven feet long, but the largest species, the black alligator, can reach 15 feet. Young alligators are much smaller and easier to find. While the alligator is hypnotized by the bright light, your canoe will slowly approach until your guide is close enough to try to pick it up with their bare hands and lift it out of the water for everyone to see. After seeing it up close, the young Alligator will be returned, unharmed, to the water. After the thrill of this incredible hunt in the dark, you’ll transfer back to the Amazon Symphony Tour.
